What actually is Google Business Profile?
Google Business Profile (used to be called Google My Business) is the free product that controls how your business shows up across Google Search, Google Maps, and the local Map Pack. It's the box that appears on the right when someone Googles your business name, and the three listings at the top when someone searches with local intent like "dentist near me".
It's the most under-used asset most UK SMEs own. Set up well and maintained weekly, it brings in more enquiries than the website does — for businesses where customers are nearby and ready to act.
The catch: Google ranks profiles partly by "active signals" — fresh posts, recent photos, regular review replies, accurate hours. A profile that hasn't been touched in 6 months drops, even if it was perfectly set up at the start.
