“How much does Google Ads cost?” is one of the first questions we get, and the honest answer starts with “it depends”. That is not much use when you are trying to set a budget, so this guide uses real figures: what clicks cost for common searches in Chester, how to work out a budget, what management costs, and how to pay less for each click.
What a click costs in Chester
These are Google Keyword Planner’s average cost-per-click figures for searches that include “chester”, over the 12 months to September 2026. They are averages across all advertisers, so some pay more and some pay less.

Searches without a town name, and urgent ones, cost far more: “boiler repair” averages £8.46 and “emergency plumber” £17.36 across the UK. Our own industry is one of the dearest: “ppc agency” averages £41.80 a click.
How Google charges you
- No minimum spend. You set an average daily budget and can pause at any time.
- You pay per click on Search ads, not per view. Impressions are free.
- Daily budgets are averages. Google can spend up to twice your daily budget on a busy day, but over a month it won’t charge more than your daily budget times 30.4. Google explains this in its help page on daily budgets.
- You rarely pay your full bid. Google charges roughly what you need to beat the next advertiser, and a better Quality Score lowers that.
How to work out your budget
Start from the clicks you need, not a round number. A simple way:
- Decide how many enquiries a month you want and can handle.
- Estimate how many visitors it takes to get one enquiry. For a good local service page, 1 in 10 to 1 in 20 is a sensible planning range until you have your own figures.
- Multiply the clicks you need by the average cost per click for your search.
Wants 10 enquiries a month. Plans on 1 enquiry per 15 clicks, so needs about 150 clicks. At the £4.09 average for “plumber chester”, that is roughly £615 a month in ad spend, or about £20 a day. Better pages and ads can bring both the clicks-per-enquiry and the cost per click down over time.
Our Google Ads budget calculator does the same sums for your own figures. Treat the result as a starting estimate, not a forecast.
What Google Ads management costs
If someone manages the account for you, there is a fee on top of the ad spend. Agencies usually charge either a flat monthly fee or a percentage of what you spend with Google. Ask exactly what is included: keyword research, ad writing, landing-page changes, conversion tracking, weekly search-term checks and reporting are often priced separately.
Ours starts from £249 a month as a flat fee, with your ad budget paid straight to Google. We are not VAT-registered, so no VAT is added. We are a Google Partner, and because we also build websites and do SEO, landing-page fixes don’t need a second agency.
How to pay less for each click
The biggest lever is Quality Score: how likely people are to click your ad, how well it matches the search, and how good the landing page is. Raise it and Google charges you less for the same position.
- Send each ad to a page about that exact service, not your homepage.
- Put the searched words in the headline. “Emergency Plumber in Chester” beats “Quality Plumbing Services”.
- Read your search terms weekly and add negative keywords for searches that will never buy.
- Fence the area and hours to where and when you can actually take the work.
- Be careful with full automation. Automated bidding needs real conversions to learn from. Settings that let Google choose its own searches and ad text can spend money on things you would never buy.
Is Google Ads worth it for a small business?
It is worth it when a click costs less than the profit an enquiry brings, after allowing for the ones that don’t buy. For a dentist paying £1.65 a click, the maths is easy. For a locksmith paying £13.23, every wasted click hurts, so tight targeting and a strong landing page matter more. If your clicks cost more than they earn, look at the page and the search terms before you raise the budget.
